The Ministry of Culture has begun planning for the upcoming Jerash Festival, and has set aside the funds to pay for it, Minister of Culture Salah Jarrar said on Tuesday.

“This time, the ministry will be financially responsible for the event and has allocated JD1.7 million for organising it,” he told reporters during a press conference held yesterday to discuss the ministry’s plans for this year.

The festival, first held in 1981, was revived last year after a four-year absence during which authorities launched the Jordan Festival, a nationwide event under which Jerash Festival became a component, drawing bitter criticism from fans, artists and associations.

Discussing the ministry’s other plans for the year, Jarrar stressed yesterday that culture is not only a form of entertainment, but should also serve to promote social values and cohesion.

“If a nation does not preserve its heritage and culture, it has no identity,” he underscored.

Noting that archiving documents and items of historical significance is among the ministry’s top priorities, Jarrar reiterated a previous call for Jordanians who possess documents reflecting the Kingdom’s history and heritage to donate these items to the National Library Department.

He said the ministry will also focus this year on encouraging the public to learn and appreciate more of their cultural heritage, and on getting more Jordanians into the habit of reading.

Among its pro-reading initiatives, he said, the ministry is planning to hold a book fair where Jordanians can buy used books at reduced prices.

The ministry is also examining ways to boost attendance at cultural events.

Asked by The Jordan Times about the possibility of broadcasting these events on television, the minister replied: “We are considering cooperating with local TV channels.”

Meanwhile, Jarrar announced that the ministry plans to hold several cultural activities this year, including repeats of successful past events as well as new ones.

“New events will be organised, such as the Jordanian cultural diversity festival, which will include various traditional dance performances and traditional Jordanian food, and the Petra Cultural Festival. Annual events like the family library will also be held,” he added.
