    The sea/ocean is blue, because of the different wavelengths of light. Blue/purple being the longest. The deeper the water, the 'deeper' blue it is. When you have water that sometimes looks green, you notice that the water is shallow, and the 'green' you see is when light is reflecting off of the sandy bottom. The distance is shorter, so you have a somewhat different wavelength of light.
